Research On NeurOptimal® For Treating PTSD
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It can include war and combat, a serious accident, a terrorist act, rape and sexual assault, and in those who have been threatened with death, injury, or sexual violence.
With PTSD, this system becomes overly sensitive and triggers easily. In turn, the parts of your brain responsible for thinking and memory stop functioning properly. When this occurs, it’s hard to separate safe events happening now from dangerous events that happened in the past.
Neurofeedback and PTSD
Research into the short-term effects of neurofeedback on those suffering from the effects of PTSD has had positive results. One study by Marie-Laure Wagner, M.S. Zengar NeurOptimal® Representative & Founder of InnerOptimal, titled “Overcoming Extreme Challenges: How NeurOptimal® can be an Answer for our Veterans,” found encouraging results among veterans doing three years of weekly NeurOptimal training.
Another study titled “Effect of Short Term Use of NO on Neurotransmitter and Cortisol Levels in PTSD” sought to look at cortisol, an inflammation marker high in those with PTSD. They found that it could lower cortisol levels, making it easier for individuals with PTSD to fall asleep and stay asleep.
